Flowery Branch projects no tax increase despite economic slowdown

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
FLOWERY BRANCH - The City of Flowery Branch released its 2009 $3 million budget draft Wednesday morning; City Manager Bill Andrew said it's balanced, with no expected tax increase, but it's going to take reserve funding.

Andrew said the construction industry slowdown is slowing down city revenues; he plans to fill the resulting revenue "hole" with just over $300,000 from the city's $1 million reserve.

"We have been hit really hard on new construction and so that's a problem that we see going forward if there is no turn around in the economy in a year," Andrew said.

Andrew said if the economy does not improve the city might have to look at a tax increase, cutting some services and laying off some employees.

"The city's always been conservative," Andrew added. " Our projected spending is only going up 1.4 percent for next year, but we feel that our revenue is going down in a way that we really have to borrow from that reserve."
