FLOWERY BRANCH - Flowery Branch Historic Preservation Commission members Wednesday approved the first step in a $15 million project to revitalize downtown.
The mixed use development next to historic Main Street promises retail and residential with a period look, plus a five story parking deck.
Commission Chairwoman Mary Jones said developers could start getting building permits.
"It was an opportunity to pass and give them a certificate of appropriateness for the Hartman Dobbs development," Jones said.
Jones, also a city council member, expects no opposition from the council; while the project is market driven, developer Marty Hortman hopes to begin construction this summer.
The preservation commission also approved the project design and elevations; that means the project will fit and enhance downtown's historic appearance.
