A night to honor YMCA friends and supporters in Gainesville

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Thursday night was a night to thank all those who make the YMCA possible in Gainesville/Hall County.

A long lists of friends, corporate and individual benefactors, partners and community supporters drew recognition at the annual "Heroes Dinner," for what President and CEO Mike Brown called a huge success.

"We couldn't have done this project or even gotten this 'Y' started without all the volunteers and supporters both financially and through their work," Brown said.

Georgia Mountains YMCA Board President Randall Frost was named Volunteer of the Year at the event, held at the new 'Y' facility named for businessman Jim Walters, located on the Highway 365 corridor just north of Gainesville.

"The 'Y' has been here for 10 years but the J.A. Walters YMCA was a one year project," Brown said.

"We raised $4.5 million with 80 supporters and now we have 12,000 members. We still need to raise $2 million to make sure this operation can remain stable."

A brand new Harley motorcycle greeted banquet visitors at the gym door as an incentive to buy raffle tickets to raise money.
