Gainesville City Council changes vote

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council Tuesday changed its position regarding a controversial zoning amendment to permit a gas station near the Seasons on Lanier active senior development on Browns Bridge Road.

The second reading vote was two in favor, two against, with Georgia Wangemann making the motion to hold the second reading just so he could vote against it.

Councilman Bob Hamrick motioned not to have the second reading at all on a request to turn the 10-acre site at Browns Bridge Road and McEver road into a Race Trac filling station.

Under Council voting rules on zoning issues a tie means a denial.

Council, at their meeting May 6th, approved the zoning amendment request; Councilman Danny Dunagan made the motion to approve Easlan Capital's request to put the gas station on Season's commercial segment.

Dunagan was away on vacation and was not present to break the tie vote.

Mayor Myrtle Figueras voted for the amendment along with Mayor Pro Tem Ruth Bruner.

"Typically when we come to council meetings, if we have approved a first reading, the second reading will be approved," the Mayor said. "Today was a road block to that and we decided to deny when it had already been approved on first reading."
