NEW YORK - Georgia ranks 40th among the states in an annual report on the welfare of the nation's children.
The Kids Count report presents a sobering statistic: the percentage of underweight babies born in the U.S. has increased to its highest rate in 40 years.
The report also documents a recent rise in the number of children living in poverty.
The report does note improvements in the rate of deaths among children and teens, along with the teen birth rate, high school dropout rate, and teens not in school and not working.
It shows no improvement in infant mortality.
