Big fireworks show, big traffic jam, at Laurel Park

GAINESVILLE - An estimated 10,000 people did not let bumper to bumper traffic or the threat of a thundershower stop them from enjoying the American Legion July 4th fireworks show Friday night at Laurel Park.

Post Seven adjutant Ray Shubert said the Legion moved its annual fireworks show out to Laurel Park to make room for more people.

"We're having a double show, it's twice as much as we usually do on the 4th of July," Shubert said. "We're trying it out here this year and then we'll see what happens next year and Hall County helped out with the cost of the fireworks."

Shubert said Laurel offered much more parking, but parking lots filled up as more and people arrived to watch the big sky show, and traffic backed up on U.S. 129 en route to the park.

"I've been out to the club and it took and hour and a half to get back," Shubert said, noting that visitors arriving just before the show started at nightfall were parking along the highway.

Frank Zadamski and his family from Murrayville spent the day at the park and got there ahead of he traffic jam.

"We got out here early," Zadamski said. "It's great, we're having a cookout and playing on the playground, we just made a day out of it."
