A's qualify for state tourney, set sights on North Ga. title

By Jeff Hart Sports Reporter
CANTON - The last two seasons the Gainesville A's American Legion baseball team lost in the second round only to come out of the loser's bracket to win the North Georgia title each time.

The 2008 A's are following their own script for success after beating Conyers 8-1 Saturday at Cherokee High School to qualify for the upcoming state tournament.

The A's will take on Loganville Sunday at 5 p.m. at Cherokee with a possible chance to move into the championship game.

A's coach Clay Haynes said his team (23-12) is playiing it's best ball of the summer and would love a shot at a third straight North Georgia title.

"It depends on what happens (Sunday) and who wins as who we will play next but we already know we're going to the state tournament," Haynes said. "The last two years we came out of the loser's bracket to win the (North Georgia) title so we're used to it."

Will Rowlett led the A's into the state round with a solid effort on the mound Saturday. Rowlett pitched six innings allowing five hits while striking out three. P.J. Krauss and Cody Ackerman provided the bulk of the offense with three hits and two RBI each in an 11-hit Gainesville attack. Krauss had a solo home run.

Gainesville's only loss in the tournament came against Rockdale, which is undefeated in the tournament.

the state tournament is slated to begin August 1 at Middle Georgia College in Cochran.
