HCC gives go-ahead for boat ramp extensions

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County commissioners Monday heard recommendations on re-opening closed boat ramps on Lake Lanier, and gave the go-ahead to repair and re-open four of them.

Public Works Director Ken Reardon said a Corps of Engineer ranger told him to extend ramps with pre-cast concrete; gravel won't work.

"They had experience with that last year," Reardon said. "They attempted to open some of these ramps with gravel and one of their rangers said the average life of that gravel was about three days."

Commissioners approved a maximum cost of $110,000 to extend the ramps at Balus Creek, Mountain View, Sardis Creek and Dunlap's landing off Thompson Bridge Road.

Reardon also told commissioners the Corps was receptive to the county taking over some lakeside parks and boat ramps and re-opening them.

The Hall County resident who proposed extending and re-opening the closed ramps told commissioners they are leaving one out.

Taxpayers Association President Doug Aiken told commissioners to add Bolding Mill Park.

"What a waste," Aiken said. "It's just sitting there with gasoline prices like they are and people not being able to take long trips."

Aiken said with its 97 camp sites, Bolding Mill could be a recreation "gold mine" for the county.
