'Happy hour' gets final go-ahead from GCC

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - It is now the law: Gainesville alcoholic beverage vendors may now have a "happy hour" if they choose to do so.

With dissenting votes from Councilmen George Wangemann and Bob Hamrick, the council gave final approval, 3-2, for restaurants with bars to offer reduced price drink sales, six days a week, from 5-7 p.m., excluding Sundays.

Councilman Danny Dunagan made the motion.

"I supported it so that we could be on the same playing field as other areas of Hall County and surrounding areas so our restaurants could compete with them," Dunagan said.

The council also approved administrative changes in its alcohol beverage ordinance that reflect recent state law changes.

The amendment makes way for wine tastings, and allows customers to leave the vendor's premises with a partially consumed bottle of wine.

The amendment also allows alcohol permit applicants to pay a prorated fee instead of entire fee up front on applications filed after July 1 each year, the start of the city's Fiscal Year.
