Local Democrats celebrate Obama's nomination

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County Democrats celebrated America's first African American Presidential nominee Thursday night at the Hunt Tower atrium in downtown Gainesville with a convention watch party.

As party members watched the Denver convention on a wide screen t.v., chairman Abb Hayes said they've been working on getting out the local vote for Barack Obama.

"We have people knocking on doors, registering new voters and talking to new folks who might be undecided," Hayes said.

Likeevia Cox, 19, said the occasion was exciting, almost like being at the national convention.

"It's close enough," she said. "I'm excited to see all the people here and people who are concerned about the same things I am."

Cox, a sophomore at Gainesville State College, said she felt she witnessed history with Obama's nomination and acceptance speech.
