Fair Street Elementary School building to be replaced with new facility

By Katie Austin
GAINESVILLE - After a meeting Thursday night at Gainesville's Fair Street Elementary School, the decision was made to tear down the facility.

According to Assistant Principal Kim Davis, the school needs to be completely replaced for a number of reasons. She pointed out that the roof leaks every time there is rain, there are electrical problems and one wing of the school is actually sinking.

Funding for the new Fair Street school would come from SPLOST funds, if those funds are okayed in a March 2011 vote.

If the SPLOST passes, then Fair Street students would move to Wood's Mill Academy, the former Gainesville Middle School, until the new facility is complete. Students would occupy the new school in 2013 if all goes as planned.
