Cracking down on delinquent library patrons

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Library Board of Trustees members decided Tuesday night that it is 'three strikes and you're out' when it comes to past due books and materials.

The recommendation for that policy change came from System Director Adrian Mixson, who said the statewide library network, known as PINES, is now sending out only two late notices to save money. Mixson said the Hall System would send a third notice, and when it does, overdue patrons better pay attention.

"The notice says if you don't get that book back to us within a couple of weeks we are going to send you to collections and it's going to go on your credit report," Mixson said.

According to Mixson, the third notice is for people who have failed to return library property within 90 days and owe large late fees.

"If you owe $25 you're going to go to collections," Mixson said. "We've given you every opportunity and now we're letting you know how serious it really is. If you don't want to have a bad credit report, you need to come over here and settle up."

ONLY ONE ASSISTANT DIRECTOR

Board members also agreed to streamline system organization during their last meeting for 2009. Mixson recommended the change to reduce the number of assistant directors.
