Daytime fishing tournaments set to resume on Lanier

By Staff
GAINESVILLE - Now that the level of Lake Lanier has gone up a few feet, daytime fishing tournaments can resume.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says it's still too dangerous on Lanier to accept applications for night fishing tournaments. The Corps points to low water levels and boating hazards, and they say night fishing tournaments cannot resume until the Lanier reaches 1064 feet. As of Monday afternoon, the lake level was 1056.63. The level rose 3.49 feet in January and is up 5.66 feet since December December 9. A year ago, it was 1051.58.

Currently Lake Sidney Lanier has 13 boat ramps open. With Laurel Park expected to open in early spring the Corps of Engineers will accept applications at Little Hall Park and Balus Park primarily until the lake reaches levels above 1059. Applications should be submitted at least 30 days in advance. Until lake levels reach 1059 no events will be reviewed past 3 months.

Applicants can access special event application information on the web at http://lanier.sam.usace.army.mil/SpecialEvents.htm.
