LAWRENCEVILLE - A month-long screening at the Gwinnett County jail turns up hundreds of illegal aliens.
At a news conference Thursday, federal agents and Gwinnett County Police announced that the intense screening process had turned up 915 foreign born inmates in the jail population. Of those identified as illegals, 489 had previous criminal histories.
The county still has to wait to hear whether it has been accepted into the federal 287(g) program, which would allow local authorities to begin deportation paperwork. Hall County, along with Cobb and Whitfield counties, and the Georgia State Patrol already participate in the 287(g) program.
