Layoffs 'tough' for Hall teachers

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Schools Superintendent Will Schofield declared Monday night that last week's layoffs were "painful" for everyone involved.

Schofield discussed the layoffs at the first school board meeting since the layoffs Thursday and Friday. That's when teachers and others got word from their principals that they would not be rehired for the next school year.

One hundred certified positions were cut, affecting 135 employees, some of them part time; about 35 are transferring out and retiring, but most won't be back because of funding.
