GAINESVILLE - The Safe Kids Coalition of Gainesville-Hall County is beginning another busy year with the arrival of Memorial Day weekend, but Thursday it was time for awards.

Fourteen local agencies and businesses were recognized for their support and cooperation this year.

This year's Safe Kids Teacher of the Year Award went to McEver Elementary school nurse Dee Scarpellino; Hall County Fire Services received the Community Agency of the Year Award and Medlinda Smith of Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Emergency Room was named Volunteer of the Year.

Safe-Kids programs and safety equipment give-a-ways have impacted 44,000 people including parents and kids in the past year according to coordinator Kim Martin, and the work won't stop.

"We're going to check car seats this afternoon and try to reach families who may be traveling this Memorial Day weekend, Martin said.

Martin recieved the Joe Lane Cox award, a statewide Emergency Medical Service honor.

Captain Cliff Miller, commander of GSP's Troop 'B', was guest speaker at the banquet.
He said cooperation between agencies is what saves lives.

"We've got to cooperate and remember the winner is the life you save, not the agency you are," Captain Miller said.

Miller pledged state patrol support and cooperation to all area safety agencies as well as the Safe Kids Coalition.
