Homer kicks off Labor Day fest

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
HOMER - If It's Labor Day weekend it must be festival time in Homer, Georgia.
In fact it's the 37th Annual Homer Banks County Festival in a town celebrating it's 150th birthday.

Festival committee member Tim Harper was busy setting up the festival in the shadow of the historic Banks County Court House, dating back to 1859.

"This is Homer's Labor Day festival and we've enjoyed it for a lot of years," Harper said, "We hope we'll enjoy it for 37 more."
"All the community and the county pulls together and works together for the betterment of the county and for the enjoyment of the people here in Banks County."

Harper said local folks and countless visitors this weekend are expected to come see the arts, crafts and entertainment that continues through Sunday.

The music started shortly before sunset Friday with a full schedule of performers and events scheduled for Saturday including a watermelon seed-spitting contest.
Sunday features gospel performances.

Harper said the featured attraction Saturday night is country and Southern Rock artist Brantley Gilbert

Authentic Cherokee 'Kicking Bird' pottery and hand made wood craft from Flowery Branch are just samples of the arts and crafts visitors will see this weekend at the festival, and then there's old fashioned churned ice cream, with the churn powered by an 83 year old combustion engine, according to ice cream promoter Scott Greth.

"What we have here is a 1926 Hercules engine and back in the day it use to power anything that needed to be powered," Greth said.
