Some Wrigley workers to lose jobs

By B.J. Williams
FLOWERY BRANCH - The Wrigley Company is restructuring the business, and that means job losses across North America, including the chewing gum manufacturing plant in Hall County.

"Following a strategic review of the American Supply Chain operations, we've made a decision to reduce head count across the region...North American...by 5-percent," said Flowery Branch Plant Manager Jim Fitzgerald.

While Fitzgerald could not pinpoint a specific number of employees who would lose jobs in Hall County, he said that North American operations for Wrigley includes some 2200 workers.

"This will be accomplished through both a combination of voluntary and involuntary separations," stated Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald emphasized that the company is not in danger of closing.

"We're very committed to the community," said Fitzgerald. "Unfortunately, we have to take this step, but we see great growth potential in the future, after we take these steps, for the plant in Hall County."

The company announced the pending changes to employees on Tuesday.
