The Collegiate named best burger joint in Ga.

GAINESVILLE - USA TODAY asked local experts to name one great burger joint in each state and the District of Columbia, and it just so happens that a beloved Gainesville business was picked to represent the peach state.

"Oh, we were just tickled to find out about it and extremely honored," said The Collegiate Grill owner Jeff Worley.

He said the downtown Gainesville restaurant hosted a group of travel writers in May, which probably spurred the nomination.

"I'm thinking that it came from one of those guys," he said.

Worley said the article, published Friday, couldn't have come at a better time with the Petit Le Mans event taking place this weekend.

"There's a lot of folks in from all over the country actually, and I think a lot of them read USA TODAY because we heard from a lot of them today that are from outside of our area but saw that in the paper and had to come up and check us out," he said.

The national publication raves about the grill's freshly prepared burgers, dogs and shakes and the 1940's setting that hasn't really changed since it opened its doors more than 60 years ago.
