Gainesville councilman calls for night meetings

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Beginning next year, citizens would be able to attend both regular Gainesville City Council meetings in the evening under a proposal from from Councilman George Wangemann.

Right now one of those regular voting meetings is held at 9:00 a.m at a time when many people cannot attend. Wangemann said Tuesday night he wants to set next year's meeting calendar to schedule voting meetings at night.

"I think it would be better for the public to come in the evening since many people work," Wangemann said.

LOCAL VENDOR PREFERENCE

Gainesville's local vendor preference ordinance is now law. It got final approval from City Council Tuesday night. City Manager Kip Padgett says it gives Gainesville vendors the ability to be the local bidder when competing for city contracts with out of town businesses.

"If you're a local vendor and you're within three percent of the lowest bid that is not from a local vendor, then we will allow you to see if you can match that low bid," Padgett said.

The local vendor preference applies to purchases or contracts over $20,000 and less than $100,000.

City Council also gave final approval to an ordinance which adds on a $10 "technology fee" to city fines to provide funding for improvements to city police, the municipal court, code enforcement and the city marshal's office.
