GAINESVILLE - It was a time to remember Saturday morning during Riverside Military Academy's Homecoming weekend with the Fallen Heroes Dedication; the dedication honored alumni killed in action in Vietnam, Iraq and Afghanistan.
Riverside Director of Alumni relations Errol Bisso knew six of the seven honorees and attended RMA with four of them. He said their service has special meaning for today's cadets.
"They're able to do the things they do now a days because of what these boys sacrificed," Bisso said.
The dedication ceremony was attended by honoree family members. President of the Atlanta Vietnam Veterans Business Association Alan Gravel flew cargo planes during the war and said the nation must learn how to treat its fallen heroes and service members.
"This lesson must be taught to every generation," Gravel said. "Every generation that comes along must be taught this lesson lest it be lost."
Col. Gregory Barras, Class of 1950; Second Lt. Timothy Blake, Class of '60,; Captain Freeman Carr, Class of '60; Lt. Col. Joseph Phillip Seymoe (former RMA Military Instructor) and 1st Lt. David Taylor, Class of '60 are the fallen heroes from the Vietnam War.
Specialist Ryan Bell, Class of '03, is a fallen hero from Operation Iraqi Freedom and Capt. Kyle Comfort Class of '01 is the fallen hero of the Afghanistan War.
At the end of the ceremony plaques were unveiled at the base of the RMA flag pole to honor and remember the men.
