GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council is reviewing a turn-key, state of the art sewer repair system from a Florida company that could save time, money and lives for just over $100,000.
If Council approves it Public Utilities Distribution manager Joey Leverette says the system, complete with a trailer containing equipment and repair kits, would mean no more tearing up streets to get to damaged lines and no more deep, dangerous working conditions beginning early next year.
"It can be used trenchless without digging up the streets, without putting the employees at risk by being in excessive depths while they're working," Leverette said. "It's not for all situations but for a lot of situations it will improve our operations."
The vendor, Perma-Liner Industries of Clear Water, Florida, provides a Polyurethane coated inner tubular material with a 50 year warranty that is cured in place and installed with a custom flow bladder inserted into the pipe line. That is what would enable the city to avoid costly and time consuming pavement excavation and hazardous trenches subject to cave-ins.
"Technology has improved in the past 15 to 20 years," Leverette said. "It allows you to do things you could not do before. It's a turn-key purchase; we get everything we need and plenty of training to make sure we do it properly."
According to Leverette, with Council's go-ahead, the system would be in place and ready to repair sewer lines by the first of the year.
