Deal arrives home, predicts a win, no runoff

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - The Republican gubernatorial candidate from Gainesville made his final stop after a 19 month campaign at Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport Monday night. Nathan Deal remains confident his 'grass roots' supporters would elect him Tuesday, there would be no runoff, and opponent Roy Barnes attack campaigning has failed.

Deal, greeted by local supporters and friends at the aircraft hangar where he held his July 20th primary election party, said he found big crowds of supporters around the state and on election eve, he considered that a good sign. Deal said Democrat Roy Barnes negative campaigning would back fire on him.

"People are being just turned off by the fact that my opponent from the very first day of the general election started out with negative campaigning and never let up," Deal said.

Deal said Barnes campaign ads would cause him to lose, not gain votes.

"This has been a long 19 months, we've had a lot of support from all over the state but there's no place like home," Deal said.

Local supporters including Hall County Republican Party chairman Jim Pilgrim agreed with Deal that he would get enough votes to avoid a runoff race.

"I don't believe there will be a runoff," Pilgrim said. "I know he's glad to be home, I know he's tired and we don't need four more weeks of this."
