Gainesville developments picking up a bit

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Construction crews have been busy around Gainesville lately, making way for some much-wanted business developments in the city.

City planner Matt Tate points to several new projects in Gainesville, including two new restaurants planned on Dawsonville Highway just west of McEver Road.

"They are clearing at this point in time for an Olive Garden Restaurant and, tentatively, a Cheddars Restaurant," said Tate.

And, the old Goody's Family Clothing Store building, closed nearly two years ago, is being renovated.

"That is being renovated for a new ALDI grocery store," said Tate. "And, it is approximately 21,500 square feet in size."

In addition, on Jesse Jewell Parkway, land is being cleared near the Frances Meadows Center for a new medical office building.

Tate noted that the new contruction activity is promising for Gainesville.

"We're certainly not where permits were, say, in 2005 through 2007, but it is slowly picking up."
