Santa pays a call on newborns at NEGMC

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Santa Claus turns up in the most unusual places these days, like Northeast Georgia Medical Center's Neo Natal Intensive Care Unit where he made a first time visit Monday night, according to Unit Manager MaryNell Lewis.

"My understanding is that they have not done this in the past," Lewis said. "We were thinking since a lot of them will spend their first Christmas here with us at Northeast Georgia we would love to have Santa come visit them and get their first picture with him."

"Santa" is Jeff Forrester of Gainesville, a church friend of one of the nurses, who says he is one of Santa's helpers sent because Santa just really can't be everywhere this close to Christmas.

"I am very honored to be able to do this and help Santa out, he can't be every place all the time," Santa said.

"Can't wait to get him home," new Dad David Funk of Habersham County said of six pound Chance David Funk, who weighed three pounds when he was born 11 weeks premature on November 6. Funk said he and new Mom Chantley Cantrell are going to frame and save this first picture of their son with Santa.
