GAINESVILLE - A retired dentist who started the Good News at Noon Dental Clinic and a career educator and civic leader were named the 2010 Man and Woman of the Year Monday night by the Gainesville Rotary Club.
This year's Woman of the Year honor at the Annual Rotary Club Banquet at Chattahoochee Country Club went to Julia Cromartie, whose long list of community involvement included starting a Junior Service League study committee that spawned the Gateway House women's shelter.
"It's a tribute to Gainesville," she said. "Gainesville is a place where if you have a dream, you can do it."
2010's Man of the Year, Dr. Ed Burnette organized the Good News Dental Clinic after he retired from a 36-year practice.
"I've enjoyed my time with the Clinic and the cooperation has been wonderful," Dr. Burnette said. "The Dentists of Hall County and the people of the community giving their financial support and if it were not for both of them we would not exist.'
The 2010 Sidney O. Smith Fellowship award went to Gainesville business leader and arts patron George Romberg. Presenter Doug Langman said Romberg's father Conrad received the award in 1973 and this was the first time a father and son had both received the honor. Romberg is president of Citisco, formerly known as Food Services Equipment.
