Clarkesville earns national recognition

CLARKESVILLE - After a year of planning and improving, the city of Clarkesville has been designated a Better Hometown by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.

Downtown Coordinator Lane Gresham said they were judged on promotion of the town, economic restructuring and design.

"We have a very nice core of historic buildings that have been maintained through the years," said Gresham, who began working on the Better Hometown project just over a year ago, "and it maintains the charm that echoes from yesteryear."

Gresham said Clarkesville has several events planned throughout the year to help promote itself, including a Taste of Clarkesville festival, a series of outdoor movie viewings in warmer weather and the annual Mountain Laurel Festival.

She said the designation as a Better Hometown helps even more with its promotion.

"The theme is downtown revitalization, and a focused approach to bringing people to Clarkesville."

She calls the designation as a Better Hometown a "seal of approval" for the town.
