Commission expands lake vacation rentals

GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners with one dissenting vote Thursday morning approved an amendment to the county code that would allow single family residential home owners near Lake Lanier to rent their homes to vacationers for less than 30 days or less with some limitations.

Tax Payer Association president Doug Aiken asked the Board to table the measure, citing possible impact on hotel motel tax revenues and the homestead exemption; Commissioner Steve Gailey motioned for passage, pointing out that the Planning Commission and County Commission would have to review and approve each application. Commissioner Bobby Banks cast the no vote, questioning how the county would collect taxes on the vacation rentals.

Commissioners have already approved short term rentals in the Vacation Cottage district.
