Ga. school board to give $19M to failing schools

ATLANTA - The Georgia Board of Education is distributing $19.6 million in federal grants to help turn around 16 failing high schools.

The grants will go to schools willing to undertake one of four tactics under the federal No Child Left Behind act.

One school, Beach High School in Chatham County, has chosen to fire its entire staff. The rest of the schools are replacing their principals.

The other two tactics are converting to a charter school or closing down the school entirely.

The money is part of a $3 billion federal program from the Obama administration.
