Ten NE Ga. counties getting rural transit vehicles from state

ATLANTA - The Georgia Department of Transportation recently delivered the first of more than 200 vehicles to be purchased with federal economic stimulus money.

These shuttle buses and vans - 20 of them headed to 10 northeast Georgia counties - costing $8.25 million, will be used by rural public and community transportation systems throughout the state.

"These vehicles, purchased with federal ARRA funds, will allow rural providers to continue providing this important service at a time when economic challenges face all of us, while at the same time supporting jobs in manufacturing and distribution," noted Georgia DOT Commissioner Vance C. Smith, Jr.

The northeast Georgia counties which are getting vehicles and the number they are getting Banks (1), Dawson (3), Fannin (3), Forsyth (4), Gilmer (2), Habersham (1), Lumpkin (1), Pickens (2), Rabun (1) and Union (2).

Most of the vehicles are 11-passenger shuttle vans with a wheelchair lift. Although a few 17-passenger and 21-passenger vehicles are included.
