Oakwood approves bid, moves forward on sewer

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
OAKWOOD - Oakwood City Council Monday night gave the go-ahead on a major 2-million project to connect to the Braswell city sewer system after deciding a contractor's bid was not unbalanced, according to City Manager Stan Brown.

Council approved a resolution to accept the bid from Strickland and Sons Pipeline after a brief executive session to get legal advice. Brown said a competing contractor protested Strickland's low bid.

"I think he gave a satisfactory explanation on how he can perform that work with his own equipment," Brown said. "The Council determined it was not an unbalanced bid."

Gary's Grading claimed Strickland's bid for rock removal on the Oakwood-Braselton, Mulberry Creek Wastewater System was too low.
Brown expects the project to start within forty-five days.

City Council also approved a resolution calling for the joint application with three other cities for million-dollar development planning grant.
Brown said Oakwood joins Buford, Braselton, and Flowery Branch in applying for the funding and form a communities planning consortium.

"We know the economy is down right now but this is a high growth potential, it's a really good sign that the cities are working together," Brown said.

Brown added the cities would provide 25 percent matching funds so each could draw $250,000 to plan and promote economic development.
