Chattahoochee golf cart fees going up

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Golf cart fees are going up a dollar for 18 holes and fifty cents for nine holes at Chattahoochee Golf Course; that's Tuesday night's decision from Gainesville City Council to finance 65 new golf carts. The present cart fleet is four years old, worn out, and out of warranty.

City Councilman Bob Hamrick said he wanted to avoid a $161,000 interfund loan to buy the carts by raising the golf cart fee higher to $3 and reducing the greens fee $5. Council agreed with Golf Director Rodger Hogan that raising the cart fee to $3 would cause golfers to play elsewhere.

Mayor Protem Danny Dunagan supported the $1 fee, saying the course does not have to discount its rates to stay competitive and play would come back to Chattahoochee eventually as the economy recovers from the recession. Golfers played 400 less rounds this year than last year; Hamrick said it reflected the times.

FIRST READING YES VOTE

Gainesville's solid waste ordinance revision took a step toward final approval with Council's unanimous first reading yes vote; there was no public opposition to the measure. Mayor Ruth Bruner said the amendments are based on what citizens wanted.

Final approval is expected at the next council meeting on twice a week back door service while allowing the city to take over recycling and limit the amount of garbage picked up weekly beginning in January.

Council also gave first reading approval to amendments to the city's brown bagging ordinance, its street and sidewalks sales ordinance, and the adult entertainment ordinance.

HISTORIC DESIGNATION

City Council said yes to designating the Harper Smith House on Athens Street as a historic African American landmark. The request came from Bethel A.M.E. Church and spokesman Brian Wells said the church wants to preserve the former home of Dr. William Harper, Gainesville's first African American school principal. The house, damaged in a roof fire last year, was donated to the church and is now being restored.
