Tough winter storm brings slow retail but snow fun

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - It has been a treacherous travel day for motorists who ventured out into Northeast Georgia's six to eight inch snow fall today, but it has also been a fun day for school children who are getting days off because of the weather.

There is also the fun part of tough winter weather. Gainesville's young and young at heart grabbed their sleds and one popular spot was the hill in City Park across from the tennis courts according to Chris Romberg.

"The snow is perfect here right now," Romberg said. "It's packed down, its fast and they can maneuver a little bit, so it's really good."

Ten year old Sadie Abernathy was one of eight young sledders who came rushing down the hill.

"There's really deep snow and we go really fast," she said.

The snowy, slick roads in the Gainesville area had their effect on retail activity; customers who did venture out bought necessities to get through the storm according to Ed Waller at Green Grocery on Ronnie Green Parkway.

"We've had some good runs but it's been pretty sparse, not many people are getting out," Waller said. "We've sold some of our chicken salad as usual but wine and beer is a big deal today, everybody's just wanting to cuddle up at home."

Waller said the weather was not stopping Green Grocery, serving Gainesville for 60 years.

"We try to be here even in worst weather so people can come in and get that they need," Waller added. "We'll just keep plugging along and do what business we can."

Waller said he's hopeful more customers may come by Tuesday, but forecasters say slick roads may stay around through the week with the low temperatures.
