Nopone Road Park options: cost more or save?

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners are considering what to do with the library space at the Nopone Road Community Center since they've decided a library won't go there; that library is re-committed to the city of Clermont when construction funds are available.

Public Works Director Ken Reardon has presented three options; leave the space vacant and save a half million dollars, build a technology center within the $9.73-million project budget, or build a performing arts center.

"Here's Option Three," Reardon said, at Monday's commission work session. "Redesign the old library space with approximately 2500 sq. ft.added, the cost would increase by approximately $3.5-million."

Commissioner Craig Lutz wondered Monday if the arts center might be best.

"I guess my concern is that while Option Three may be more of an impact on capital it might be a lot cheaper in the long run on the general fund in personnel and equipment turnover and that kind of thing," Lutz said.

Commissioners also must also consider which option complies with the voter approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax list. For that reason Commissioner Billy Powell questioned if the performing arts center would be an option since it was not delineated on the 2009 SPLOST ballot, depending on how broad the ballot language was.

Reardon also told commissioners that to date the Cool Springs Park project has cost $875,713 of the approved $1,188,384. It would save around $140,000 to shut project down.
