HCC approves hospital bond support hike, schedules vote on Sun. alcohol sales

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Hall County Commissioners Thursday night agreed to raise their credit support for Northeast Georgia Medical Center's new South Hall hospital but the move was not without citizen concerns.

Phyllis Mercer noted that the county was not supplying sewer to the hospital site; John Rogers was uncertain about the impact of "Obamacare."

"You're going to see hospitals close because of Obamacare if it is not repealed," Rogers said.

Commissioner Ashley Bell said the Commission did ask questions about increasing support for up to $200-million in bonds to be issued by the Hospital Authority and got the right answers.

"This does not push us that close to our debt limit," Bell said. "The hospital's finances are sound, they've got a lot in reserve so I'm comfortable with this."

SUNDAY ALCOHOL SALES

Hall County voters get to decide if they want package liquor sales and liquor by the drink on Sunday when the question is put on the ballot on the presidential primary ballots next March 6. Commissioner Scott Gibbs made a series of motions, saying he wanted to enable Hall retailers close to city limits to compete on a "level playing field."

"What we're doing is limiting the number of businesses that are willing to come into unincorporated Hall County," Gibbs said.

Commissioners unanimously approved Gibbs' motions on whether to allow beer and wine package sales on Sundays in unincorporated Hall County, to allow alcoholic beverage sales by the drink on Sundays, allow package sales of distilled spirits and whether to allow package sales of distilled spirits on Sundays.

Gibbs said allowing Sunday sales would help bring more hotels and restaurants into the county, but added whether to allow the sales will be up to the voters.
