'The Oaks' lights up for Christmas

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - It was a full afternoon of Yule Tide Fun Saturday at the 'Oaks' in the very first event of its kind at the Lanier Charter Career Academy attended by nearly 500 visitors.

Principal, Dr. Cindy Blakley, said she wants the 'Lighting of the Oaks' to become an annual Christmas time event.Students, faculty and volunteers prepared for five weeks for the event that included seasonal arts, crafts, and singing and of course, Santa Clause.

The grand finale was the lighting of the giant red oak tree, the academy icon and namesake. Dr. Blakley said a Jackson EMC crew and a bucket truck top helped install the lights on the big tree, which is actually two trees that grew together and is over 100 years old.

Inside the hallways were lined with Christmas trees for the Festival of Trees; one room was filled with Gingerbread houses, church and school groups sang carols and arts and crafts vendors were busy with holiday offerings including sweet treats and handmade decorations.

Winner of the Festival of Trees competition was Project Search.
