Mayor calls for non-binding mediation on Cedar Creek

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Gainesville City Council took a step toward resolving the thorny issue of who controls the Cedar Creek Reservoir by approving a request from Mayor Ruth Bruner Tuesday night during their regular session.

Mayor Bruner said last year she hopes mediation would settle who has title to the reservoir, the city or the county, since the city wants to build a water treatment plant there.

"I would like to suggest that we appoint myself and Mayor Protem Danny Dunagan to participate in non-binding mediation with the county," Bruner said.

City Council and County Commission members reportedly agreed January 21st to move ahead with mediation but have not set a date yet. The Commission is expected to consider a resolution at its next meeting that would set the terms of the mediation; last year Chairman Tom Oliver said he wanted mediation sessions open to the public, but Bruner said she expects they would be behind closed doors.

CHEAPER RATES

City Council gave first reading approval to an ordinance amendment that lowers sewer service for customers outside the city. The amendment revises the fees so that effective July 1st this year, the sewer rate drops to $6.73 per 100 cubic feet for outside customers, the same city customers pay, according to Public Utilities Finance Division Manager Tina Weatherford.

Weatherford said the monthly accounts servicing fee drops to four dollars, the same as city customers, by January 1st, 2013.

"We are working to equalize that rate over the next two to three years," Weatherford said.
