Gainesville BOE wants more teacher hiring input

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - The Gainesville School Board discussed getting more parents involved, how to expand the school system and provide the best teachers during their downtown luncheon retreat Tuesday.

Board members said they want a closer look and more input when it comes to renewing and issuing teacher contracts. Dr. Delores Diaz said she wants teachers to set a moral and ethical example in addition to teaching skills.

"We need to look at everything when we consider renewals and rehires," Dr. Diaz said. "We need to look at their records."

Board members looked at a growing system and discussed when, where and what kind of new schools should be planned. Board member Sammy Smith said it would be wise to look ahead and find attractive locations for new schools.

"Those campuses should benefit our small city and maintain the look and feel of a neighborhood school," Smith said.

According to Smith the new Gainesville Elementary School on McEver Road Extension is already reaching its capacity.

Board members also discussed the possibility of adding a seventh period at the middle school and high school to provide students more instruction and study time. Board Chairman Willie Mitchell said the Board would need to look at how beneficial a seventh period would be to all students. Board member David Syfan pointed out that the so-called 'Enhancement Period' might benefit some students, others might be bored during the extra time, and still other students might waste the time.

The Board met in open session beginning around 11:00 a.m. and then convened an executive session in the Sweet Magnolias Café at Main Street Market on Gainesville's historic square downtown.
