Fire damages downtown Cleveland business

By Dean Dyer-WRWH
CLEVELAND - A neon "open" sign is believed to be the cause of a fire Thursday night at a business located on the square in Cleveland.

Cleveland Fire Chief Ricky Pruitt said the blaze was reported around 8:30 p.m. at 32 East Kytle Street at Hand Me Down Heaven.

Pruitt said when fire units arrived, there were flames and smoke showing from the courthouse side of the building.  He said firefighters made a quick interior attack and knocked down the fire.  The surrounding buildings were checked, and a few received minor smoke and water damage.

There were no injuries reported in the blaze.

The Cleveland Fire Department was assisted by White County firefighters, the Helen Fire Department and inmates at Lee Arrendale Correction Institute in Alto.

Pruitt said the fire remains under investigation.
