Former Habersham County sheriff dies

CLARKESVILLE - Former Habersham County Sheriff Robert F. "Bill" Pitts has died at the age of 84.

Pitts served four terms as sheriff from 1972 to 1988. In addition, he was the Justice of the Peace for four years in the Fork District and for four years in the city of Clarkesville.

After graduating from Clarkesville High School, Pitts graduated from Truett-McConnell College, and he also attended Piedmont College. He was a member of Clarkesville Masonic Lodge #325, F&AM,and he was a 32 degree Scottish Rite Mason, as well as was a Shriner.

A United States Navy veteran from World War II, Pitts will be buried with military honors Thursday, April 28 at Yonah Memorial Gardens.
