Lawmakers reflect on 2011 session, look ahead to summer

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - State Senator Butch Miller said Friday that he was disappointed that lawmakers could not come to an agreement on tax reform during the legislative session that wrapped up earlier this month.

He says, though, it is possible the governor might make introduce the issue during the special session this summer. If that happens, Miller says lawmakers need to be very methodical in their approach to reform.

"I believe that the people of Georgia deserve a lower income tax rate," said Miller. "In order to do that, we've got to offset that by [taxing] other items. We're looking for a broader, flatter tax."

Benton agreed with Miller, saying that he had received numerous e-mails from constituents who feared taxes on luxury items, such as satellite TV, and were not understanding the long-term benefit of tax reform.

Both Benton and Miller speculated that tax reform might be an issue that Governor Deal will introduce in this summer's special session that begins Augsut 15.
