GAINESVILLE - Gainesville's first ever Chicken City Parade stepped off under bright sunny skies Saturday morning with 30 entries featuring beauty queens, politicians wearing chicken hats, and of course, chickens....lots of rubber chickens.
The rubber chickens, 72 of them, were on the Mar-Jac Poultry float, built by employees in their spare time including the sign which read, 'Will work for corn' according to Daniel New.
"We had a worker from Mar-Jac make the sign," New said, adding that the workers ordered the rubber chickens off the Internet.
Emily Plucker and her crew of four Best Buy Buccaneers manned a pirate ship with a message made mostly of card board.
"Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, all of the 'R's so it made an 'ARRR' to represent the pirates and their ship," Plucker said, who acknowledged that her name was appropriate for the Chicken City Parade.
State Agriculture Commissioner Gary Black donned a chicken hat, so did State Senator Butch Miller, Mayor Ruth Bruner, Council member Myrtle Figueras, and Harris Blackwood, head of the Governor's Office of Highway Safety.
