Flowery Branch council considers Sunday alcohol referendum

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - The Flowery Branch City Council indicated Thursday night it is ready to put a Sunday alcohol sales on the general election ballot in November but would like public input on the question.

Mayor Pro Tem Kris Yardley suggested a town hall meeting to hear viewpoints.

Gov. Nathan Deal recently signed legislation giving local governing bodies in the state the option of scheduling a referendum on allowing stores to sell beer, wine and liquor on Sunday.

Since the measure passed the state legislature earlier this year, cities all over the state have been moving toward putting the matter to a public vote.

Dawsonville, however, has been one of the exceptions. (See separate story.)

SIGNS

The council decided to postpone a decision on the city's first electronic message sign.

Councilman Chris Fetterman said a 5,000 radius around the sign erected by owner Sandy Jones would bar anyone else from installing an electronic sign.
The amendment was up for a second reading and final vote; Council decided to postpone a decision until its next meeting May 19. Fetterman also wants the ordinance to be clear on erecting electronic monument signs in front of businesses and churches.

NEED NEW POLICE CARS

Police Chief Gerald Lanich said he'd be back May 19, as well, when the council expects to make a decision on buying new police cars to replace old ones that are wearing out. The car purchase was on the agenda but City Manager Bill Andrew recommended postponing a decision to review available special purpose sales tax revenues; Lanich is asking for seven new patrol cars costing $140,245.

NEW CITY CLERK

Possibly by Friday Flowery Branch may soon have a new city clerk. Council went into executive session after its regular session to interview five finalists for the job after receiving over 20 applications.
