Lutz responds to call for recall

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - South Hall County Commissioner Craig Lutz said Monday afternoon in a way he's encouraged that citizens are interested enough in county government to seek his recall, but he challenges accusations he did anything illegal when he began his term of office in January.

Recall supporters say they plan to kick off the recall effort July 1st when Lutz is in office 180 days. He says what his constituents wanted was behind the changes he pushed for, those changes got a 3-2 vote, and were not illegal.

"I don't mind if a person is upset with the decisions I made," Lutz said. "But if they are going to say that I've done anything illegal or unethical, I think they need to prove that. I can't think of anything that I have done that would fall into those two categories."

Lutz said recallers would have to collect 8,000 signatures to get a recall going against him.

"It's not to difficult to get the 100 signatures you need to initiate the beginning of a recall," according to Lutz. "At some point they've got to demonstrate cause and it's going to say anything done was illegal. It's going to be an uphill battle if a judge says they can go ahead and start collecting signatures beyond that point."
