King's Hawaiian signs up for 'Quick Start' training

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
OAKWOOD - King's Hawaiian Bakery announced Wednesday a training partnership with Georgia Quick Start and Lanier Technical College to support King Hawaiian's new state-of-the-art bakery and distribution operation in Oakwood, set to open in October.

Quick Start will create and implement a training program at Lanier Tech customized to the company's needs; Vice president of manufacturing Stanley Shaffer said he plans to create 95 jobs at the new plant.

"That will be two shifts running," Shaffer said. "Next year we'll look at the volumes and add another shift so we'll probably be up to around 125 to 135 people in the long run."

Russell Vandiver, Lanier Tech president, at the training agreement signing ceremony, said his school was committed to a long-term partnership with King's Hawaiian Bakery.

"Their culture impressed me from the very first meeting and inspired me to adopt several of their guiding principles at the college."

Quick Start Northern Director Mike Grundmann said the state's no cost, customized work force training program is training employees for the plant's start-up next month.

"That's our objective, to make sure the company is successful by providing well trained work force," Grundmann said.

King's Hawaiian announced plans to locate a bakery and distribution center in Oakwood's industrial park last September.

Oakwood Mayor Lamar Scroggs said he expects the plant to bring more money to his town from the new employees.

"They need to come into the community for the jobs then they spend money in the community, so it's tax base, Scroggs said.
