Developer plans housing for seniors

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - A developer got the go-ahead Thursday from Gainesville City Council for a low income housing tax credit to build housing for senior citizens.

Phillip Searles, president of Beverly Searles Foundation, wants to build Myrtle Terraces, an 84 unit complex near downtown Gainesville.

"I'm very pleased that we have the Council support and more pleased that we have community support in doing this tax credit application to help provide a housing option for seniors in Gainesville," Searles said.

Searles told Council his multi-unit development won't impact the single family Fair Street Neighborhood.

"We've tried to soften the multi-family image of our property by providing only two stories on the front of Myrtle Street as well as enough green space buffer to provide that it's not a property that is not glaring out there," Searles said. "It's going to be a little hidden and set back but it will be part of the community."

Searles plans to start construction next February at the intersection of Myrtle and Barn Street behind Guilford Clinics a mile east of downtown Gainesville.
