Bridge construction causes more closures on Jesse Jewell

By Jerry Gunn Reporter
GAINESVILLE - Expect more early evening lane closure on Jesse Jewell Parkway when work resumes next week on the largest construction and engineering project downtown Gainesville has seen in some time, the City View pedestrian bridge.

City Public Utilities project manager Barclay Fouts said Tuesday the contractor took the week of July 4th off for vacation but work resumes in earnest Monday, and when it does, Fouts says a work surface deck goes in.

"They'll be putting a work surface in underneath the bridge, it will be supported by the bridge," Fouts said. "As that progresses across Jesse Jewell they'll shut down one lane at a time, probably after 7 p.m. There would be lane closures now and then as the fencing goes up. The contractor is going to try to work off boom trucks."

Fouts says the bridgework is progressing and predicts completion by the end of September with a lot of work yet to be done. Along with the deck and the fencing, workers will add sidewalks on both ends and landscaping and the parking lot has to be replaced where it was removed to start construction.

The security fence on the bridge will be 12 feet tall in the center and three feet tall on the ends.

"That will make it look like its got more of an arch in it than it does," Fouts said.

The City of Gainesville pays no money until certificates of occupancy are issued for City's View buildings. City View developers are paying for it.

"At the point when they get a "CO" on their buildings, the City will reimburse them up to a maximum amount of $3-million," Fouts said. "The City will have revenue off the buildings as far as property taxes and hotel tax. I think that was a really good deal that the city worked out."
