Name of jail inmate found dead Friday night released

By B.J. Williams, Ken Stanford
GAINESVILLE - The inmate who was found dead in his cell at the Hall County Detention Friday night was Nathaniel Joel Whited, 29. Sheriff's department spokesman Jeff Strickland said Sunday night Whited's last known address was Flowery Branch.

Col. Strickland said Saturday that Whited was found unresponsive in his cell around 8:00. The cell was located in the medical section of the jail. On duty medical personnel attempted to resuscitate Whited, Strickland said, but they were unable to do so.

Strickland said Whitede had been housed in the county jail since February 4, 2010. He had recently been sentenced to 20 years, with five to be served in custody, for child molestation. He apparently has ongoing medical conditions, according to Strickland.

Foul play is not suspected and an autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death. As is standard procedure, Strickland said the Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in to investigate the death.
