Winder security guard charged with battery

By B.J. Williams
WINDER - A security guard at the Winder Social Security office has been charged with battery after forcibly removing a woman who was at the office with her service dog.

Winder Police Department spokesman Chris Cooper said the incident happened September 15 when Leroy Huff, the security guard, asked Melissa McMann and her husband Chris to leave the building, since they had the dog.

"Mrs. McMann is legally blind; she requires the use of a seeing-eye dog," said Cooper.

The dog, according to Cooper, was clearly marked as a service dog.

The police report indicated that Huff pulled Mrs. McMann from a chair by her arm when she refused to take the dog outside, leaving bruises on her arm and spraining her shoulder.

Huff turned himself in to authorities on September 21. He has been released on bond.
