Hall Commission approves rezoning for landfill

By B.J. Williams
GAINESVILLE - Area residents pleaded their case before the Hall County Planning Commission once and the Hall County Commission twice, but in the end commissioners approved a rezoning project off Athens Highway that allows for development of a landfill.

Esco Riley, one of the organizers of a protest against the project off Monroe Drive, refused comment following Thursday night's commission decision, saying he was too upset to discuss the matter further.

The 3-1 vote to approve came with a condition that composting not be allowed at the site, which the developer says should control odor problems.

District 4 Commissioner Ashley Bell cast the lone dissenting vote on the proposal; Commissioner Craig Lutz was not at the meeting.

Also at Thursday night's meeting, ZH Farms, LLC withdrew its request to rezone property on Timberidge Road in the east Hall area. The company had planned to build a poultry processing plant on an 81-acre site. The Hall County Planning Commission had recommended denial of that proposal.
